Crew GPS on the Office Map: Knowing Where Every Plumbing Van Is
A homeowner calls at 11am with water pouring through the kitchen ceiling. The office has three vans out. Which one is closest? Without a map, the dispatcher calls each plumber, interrupts each job, and asks where they are and how long they will be. By the time the answer comes back, the ceiling is on the floor. With crew GPS on the office map in PlumbingBossPro, the dispatcher looks at the map and knows.
Where the Locations Come From
The time clock that records the plumber's hours is covered in The Time Clock in the Plumber App: Hours Recorded as They Happen. Crew GPS answers the other question the office asks all day: where is everyone right now?
The locations come from the plumber app on each phone. When a plumber is signed in and working, the app shares the phone's location, and the office sees each plumber on the map. There is no separate tracking box to install in the van and no extra device to keep charged. The phone the plumber already uses for calls does the job.
Emergency Calls to the Closest Van
Emergencies are where crew GPS earns its keep. Burst pipes, backed-up sewer lines, a water heater leaking into a finished basement. The customer wants someone now, and the best answer is the plumber who is closest and closest to finishing.
With the map open, the dispatcher sees each van's location alongside the dispatch board, which shows what each plumber is working on and what is left on their list. The plumber across town finishing a quick faucet call may be a better choice than the one two miles away starting a water heater replacement. The dispatcher adds the emergency to the right van's list in the right spot, and it shows up on that plumber's phone in order.
Answering “When Will the Plumber Be Here?”
The most common call a plumbing office gets during the day is some version of “when is my plumber coming?” With crew GPS, the dispatcher can see where the plumber is, check how many calls are ahead of the customer, and give a real answer without calling the plumber in the middle of a job.
Many of those calls never happen in the first place. Customers who chose the “when I'm next” alert get a text when the plumber is headed their way, and the customer app shows the day's route on a live map with their place in it. The office map and the customer map work together to cut down the phone calls.
Seeing the Day Unfold
Beyond emergencies, the map gives the owner a sense of how the day is going. Vans moving across their routes, jobs turning from Started to Complete on the board, everything roughly where it should be. When one van has not moved in two hours, that is worth a quick check: a job running long, a problem with the van, or a call that turned into something bigger. The office can adjust the rest of that plumber's list before the afternoon falls apart.
It helps at the end of the day too. When a late call comes in at 4pm, the owner can see which plumber is finishing closest to that address and closest to home, and ask that one first. Small decisions like that keep the crew happier than sending whoever happens to answer the phone across town at quitting time.
Respecting the Crew
Some plumbers worry that GPS means being watched. It helps to be clear about why the company uses it: to send the closest van to emergencies, to answer customers without interrupting the plumber, and to plan better routes. It is not there to second-guess every stop for coffee or a run to the supply house.
Talk about it plainly when you roll out the app. Explain that location is shared while the app is being used for work. Plumbers who see the map making their day easier, with fewer phone calls from the office and emergency calls going to whoever is actually closest, usually stop worrying about it quickly. Setting It Up
- Allow location on each phone. When the app first asks for location permission, choose to allow it. Do this at the shop during setup.
- Keep plumbers signed in during work. The office sees plumbers who are signed in and working.
- Check the map on day one. Make sure every van shows up where it should before you rely on it for an emergency.
Crew GPS is one of those features the office stops thinking about because it is just there. For everything else in the tech app, visit the PlumbingBossPro plumber app page.
